On 9th December 2025, Marathwada Mitramandal’s College of Commerce (MMCC), Deccan, Pune, proudly participated in the inspiring reading initiative “Silence… Punekars Are Reading!”, organized under the banner of the Pune Book Festival 2025.
The initiative aimed to celebrate Pune’s rich literary heritage and promote the habit of reading on a global platform, while also contributing toward a world record attempt through collective community participation.
Promoting Reading in the Digital Age
In an era dominated by mobile phones, short-form content, and constant digital engagement, this initiative served as a powerful reminder of the enduring importance of books. The calm, collective act of reading created a reflective atmosphere across the campus and reinforced the value of focused learning and intellectual curiosity among students.
Active Participation and Leadership Support
The initiative was actively coordinated by the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Student Development Board, with enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, and staff.
The presence and involvement of leadership added great significance to the event.
Hon. Executive President Prin. B. G. Jadhav and Principal Dr. Kishore Nikam participated in the reading activity themselves, leading by example and motivating students to reconnect with books as tools of knowledge, growth, and self-development.
A Step Toward a World Record
As part of the initiative, participants:
- Read a book of their choice
- Took a geotagged photograph while reading
- Uploaded the photo via the Pune Book Festival official portal or QR code to register their participation
This structured approach transformed the act of reading into a collective civic movement, blending individual learning with a larger social goal.
Building a Reading Community
The event fostered a sense of unity, discipline, and inspiration across the campus. It not only highlighted the importance of books in shaping informed citizens but also strengthened MMCC’s commitment to holistic education that goes beyond classrooms.
The initiative was smoothly executed thanks to the disciplined planning and dedication of NSS volunteers, whose efforts ensured the program’s success.
Moving Forward
Through initiatives like “Silence… Punekars Are Reading!”, MMCC continues to encourage meaningful engagement, social responsibility, and lifelong learning among students.
As an academic institution, MMCC remains committed to nurturing a culture where reading, reflection, and responsible citizenship go hand in hand — preparing students not just for careers, but for conscious participation in society.
