Online Teaching: A SWOC

Introduction: Over almost two decades online teaching is buzz word. But in India after 2014, it really started taking its true form. At Present in this pandemic situation it has become a need of an hour. Traditional classroom teaching is shifting to virtual classroom. Online learning focuses on a wide range of technological based learning platforms, delivery methods, and the integration of educational technology components into the learning environment. The emergence of modern technology has allowed students at all levels, the opportunity to participate in advancing their education. Online learning is an influential, powerful, flexible medium that can offer transformative learning experiences to your students. The goal of face-face interaction in classroom teaching and online teaching is same to enrich student with skills, knowledge but the later requires more dedication of instructor and good mechanism of engaging students.

Strength:

1. Mobility: The students and teachers can attend the virtual classes from anywhere .ie. location and distance are ruled out. Moreover the physically challenged teachers as well as students get this as an opportunity

2. Creative Teaching: It has led the facilitator to create interactive teaching material. With the use of technology it has made teachers to convert complex concepts, theorems into simple e learning  demonstrations. The relevant videos and animated techniques used simplify the learning experience of the students.

3. Use of e resources: The Facilitator can collect and compile e learning resources relevant for the course/subject and provide them as additional links for reading

4. Popularity: The are many facilitators having highly qualified and skilled trainers can reach to maximum students anywhere. Hence they get visibility and recognition.

5. Diverse and enriching experience: Online education can enhance the student learning experience by providing opportunities for cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural and/or cross-campus collaborations. This learning experience can occur at a local, national or international level, and can be enriched by increased interaction and engagement, peer feedback, and group work skills

Weaknesses:

 Use and Access to technology: Students and teachers may face hindrance of software use and its dynamics. It may require a training of technology and tools to be used. Many students may have limited access to the electronic devices.

 Access to the Internet: In India , due to lack of required infrastructure, remote access to the resources is limitation. Moreover reliable connections and monthly usage of data component may affect the use going online.

 Information overload: A lot of information becomes “Too Much” at times for the learners as it becomes tiring to fetch relevant information.

 Lacks personal interaction: A teacher loses personal interaction with the student. During a traditional classroom session a teacher is good observer also. The gesture, comfort level can be easily noticed by the teacher while teaching.

Opportunities:

1. Popularity: There are many facilitators having highly qualified and skilled trainers can reach to maximum students anywhere. Hence they get visibility and recognition.

2. Self-paced learners are at the benefit as Live streams or recorded video offer students an opportunity to revisit the lessons at their own convenience.

Challenges:-After discussing the bright side of online teaching there are some challenges faced by teachers and students.

1. Evaluation: The result of student’s evaluation may not truly ascertain the learning objectives. Using different tools of evaluation may be time consuming.

2. Lack of Concentration: Online learning requires motivation to complete tasks, stay engaged, and make progress. When students are not surrounded by classmates and instructors in a physical setting, it may be tempting to procrastinate or loose attention.

Conclusions: The Teacher has to be proficient with this emerging technologies and its implementations in teaching. But from teacher’s perspective it will always be a blending of traditional and online teaching. This Blending has to be incorporated kin curriculum framework. This will make a better place for student to achieve flying colours.
