Date: 5 Nov. 2023

The NSS unit (A026) of Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s College of Commerce involved in *the ‘E-waste and Plastic Waste Collection Mega Drive 2023’ under the aegis of PEHEL (Plastic and E-waste Handling for Eco Friendly Lifestyle) 2023 of Pune Municipal Corporation on *Sunday, 05 Nov. 2023 from 09:00 AM to 1:00 PM.The event was organized in collaboration with PMC, KPIT Technologies, Cummins India Foundation, Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative.
The volunteers had been allocated 15 spots distributed over Deccan area, Gokhale Nagar, Bhosale Nagar, and Ashok Nagar for the purpose where we had already confirmed the list of volunteer names. Three volunteers were appointed for each spot. The monitoring committe was formed under the leadership of Shrawani Gavali, NSS Head to co-ordinate the activity. The special Whatsapp group was created for the purpose of providing updated instructions to the volunteers involved. Mr. Hemant Gawande and team from Janvani Foundation provided their guidance from time to time. During the task, the volunteers showed patience and perseverance while waiting and collecting the e-waste from citizens. Due to their genuine efforts, we are able to collect the three truck loads of e-waste and plastic from nearby residents.

(Note: E-waste can be toxic, is not biodegradable and accumulates in the environment, in the soil, air, water and living things. The improper handling of e-waste is resulting in a significant loss of scarce and valuable raw materials. According to the UN, in 2021 each person on the planet will produce on average 7.6 kg of e-waste, meaning that a massive 57.4 million tons will be generated worldwide. Only 17.4% of this electronic waste, containing a mixture of harmful substances and precious materials, will be recorded as being properly collected, treated and recycled.)
